Back to Work

The early fall season usually indicates a return to school, but for me it is a completely new concept. In June, I retired from a 37 year career in public education. I am really missing the start of a new school year, but I also hope to start some new traditions!

Moving to a new town over 250 miles away has been an adjustment. Now that things have calmed down and I am somewhat settled in, I am ready to establish my small business in a new place.

Besides the obvious changes that go along with relocating, there is also the issue of confidence and motivation. I have ordered new business cards, rented a new post office box, updated addresses, enabled cash apps, decorated and set up my new home office space, and replenished my supply of books and t-shirts.

All of that was fun and somewhat easy because I enjoy doing all of those tasks. The difficult part is to get out and promote myself. I know that once I participate in one school event, they will get easier for me, so here goes. I will be a vendor at a shelter adoption event in Newport Beach in October. It's about an hour and a half away, but it will be a great opportunity to get my feet wet (so to speak) and move toward establishing my business in a new location.

A huge distraction for me has been helping Luna and Tucker adjust to their new surroundings - and it hasn’t been easy. We lived in an extended stay hotel for nearly a month. They loved making new friends and going in and out of the hotel lobby and the elevators. They both went to 2 different boarding kennels for a few days during that time. They were such troopers through all of that. It was when we finally got to the new house that they both let loose and started struggling. Both have had some tummy issues and recently have had a few bouts with kennel cough. Luna seems to be much better, but Tucker is taking a little longer to get better. At least we found a veterinarian office we want to stay with. Southern California is a very pet friendly place.

I hope to go live on social media soon. I am not planning to read entire books, but more of a chat and a snippet of a book each time. I feel like it gets a little lengthy to read an entire children’s book on a live feed. It will help all of us get back into a much needed routine.

All in all, we are very happy to be where we are (vet bills, hotel bills, etc. excluded). I am getting used to calling SoCal my new home.
