My Journey
It all started on February 12, 2012 when I adopted Jessie from Miss Winkles Pet Adoption Center. It was my first experience with a pit bull type dog. I didn’t know much about the breed outside of what I had heard from the media - and it wasn’t good. I soon learned Jessie was just a lovable, affectionate house hippo who wanted nothing more than to be near me 24/7.
After spending time researching the breed and volunteering in animal rescue, I learned they are all basically the same. I also learned the breed is overbred and many end up in shelters for that reason. On any given day, in any shelter I have ever visited, it is a sad fact that the majority of dogs will be bull breeds or bull breed mixes. If you read “About Pit Bulls and Rescues”, you will learn that there is only one breed who can technically be called “pit bulls”. The proper term is bull breed or bull breed mix.
As I researched the breed, I felt a need to advocate on their behalf. The idea came to me after several instances of breed discrimination actually happened to me. Jessie was not allowed in any playgroups just because of her blocky head and muscular build. This discrimination was based purely on her appearance. Yes, some businesses were willing to evaluate her temperament, but those unwilling to accept her made a very negative impact. When we walked in the neighborhood, other walkers picked up their small dogs and either crossed the street or changed direction. Even my friends wanted to know why I adopted a “pit bull”. All of these experiences gave me the strength to start my advocacy.
Over the last 10 years, I have made it my business to get involved in speaking out for the breed. I will use any opportunity to provide education and positive interaction with regard to “pit bull type” dogs. It may be hard to believe, but just 5 short years ago, my editor advised me to start some social media accounts to create a following and to interact with other so-called dog people. I guess he knew who my support system would be because I have formed strong friendships with many I have never even met in person.
All of this has led to the self publishing of 3 childrens’ books. In 2018 I published “JESSIE”, in 2019 I published “Jessie’s Indigestible Incident” and in 2020 I published “GOTCHA!” My first 2 book launches were successful, but due to COVID restrictions, I was unable to host a book launch for my latest publication.
I am looking forward to sharing more information with you on this website.
Thank you,
